I Use Beetroot Powder to Make My Own Lip Balm and You Can Too

Neuherbs beetroot powder is not just for smoothies. I double-boil it with shea butter and beeswax to make a tinted lip balm at home โ€” here is how.

Heads up: This post includes product recommendations based on my own experience. There are no affiliate links here yet โ€” just honest reviews of things I actually use.

Let me tell you how a bag of Neuherbs Natural Beetroot Powder became my favourite skincare ingredient โ€” not as a face mask, not in a smoothie, but as the base for a homemade tinted lip balm I now make myself and genuinely love.

This is one of those discoveries that happened by accident. I had the powder sitting in my kitchen, originally bought for its antioxidant benefits. I saw a reel about DIY lip products, looked at what I had on hand, and went down a rabbit hole. The result is a deeply pigmented, deeply moisturising, completely natural lip balm that costs almost nothing to make.

Why beetroot powder works for lip colour

Beetroot is one of nature’s most stubborn pigments. It is the same reason your fingers turn pink when you cut one. The colour is anthocyanin-based โ€” a deep berry-pink that transfers beautifully to lips and gives a natural, your-lips-but-better tint. Not red. Not magenta. Just a warm, flattering berry that works on most brown skin tones.

Combined with moisturising bases, the beetroot stays on your lips softly rather than setting into a solid stain. It is pigmented enough to matter but sheer enough that you cannot really mess it up.

The recipe: basic beetroot lip balm

You will need:

  • 1 tablespoon shea butter (raw, unrefined)
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax pellets (or carnauba wax for a vegan version)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Neuherbs beetroot powder or any other brand โ€” increase the teaspoons if you want deeper colour
  • 2-3 drops of vitamin E oil (optional โ€” extends shelf life and adds moisture)
  • A small metal or glass container to pour into (old lip balm tins or small silicone moulds)

Method:

  • Set up a double boiler โ€” a small glass bowl over a pot of barely simmering water
  • Add shea butter and beeswax to the bowl
  • Stir slowly until both are fully melted and combined
  • Remove from heat
  • Add beetroot powder and stir vigorously to combine โ€” there will be some speckling, keep stirring
  • Add vitamin E if using
  • Pour into your container quickly before it sets
  • Let it cool at room temperature for 30-60 minutes โ€” do not refrigerate or the texture goes grainy

That is it. It sets into a firm, smooth, slightly tinted balm. Shelf life is about 3-4 months at room temperature, longer if you keep it away from water. You can skip everything and just mix up the beetroot powder in a teaspoon of coconut oil and then add it to vaseline and adjust the pigment colour based on the intensity you want.

This is a two ingredient recipe

Variations to try

  • More colour: increase beetroot powder to 1/2 teaspoon
  • Glossier finish: add a tiny bit of castor oil (a few drops) to the mix
  • Lighter tint: reduce beetroot to just a pinch, use as a clear-ish tinted balm
  • Scented version: 1-2 drops of food-grade peppermint or rose extract after removing from heat

About Neuherbs specifically

I use Neuherbs because it is 100% pure beetroot powder with no additives, fillers, or artificial colours. The texture is fine enough that it blends well into the melted base without clumping. I have tried other brands and they can be gritty or inconsistently pigmented โ€” Neuherbs is consistently good.

The same powder also goes into smoothies, face packs, and post-workout drinks if you are into that. It is a useful ingredient to have around.

Why make your own instead of buying a tinted balm?

  • You know exactly what is in it โ€” no synthetic dyes, no parabens, no fragrance
  • It is about one-fifth the cost of most natural tinted lip products
  • You can customise the shade exactly to your preference
  • It is genuinely fun and takes 15 minutes
  • The ADHD hyperfocus rabbit hole of DIY skincare is its own therapy, honestly

Where to get the powder

Here is the Neuherbs Beetroot Powder on Amazon India. The 100g bag lasts a very long time for lip balm purposes โ€” you only use a tiny amount per batch.

Give it a try. Worst case you have pink fingers for an hour. Best case you make a lip product you love that cost you almost nothing.

Feel better, without becoming a project.

Note: This recipe uses food-grade ingredients but results vary by skin sensitivity. Patch test on your inner wrist before applying to lips if you have known sensitivities. DIY products have no preservatives โ€” store in a cool, dry place and use within 3-4 months.
